EdgeEX — Customizing courses: Adding a course split at the District or School level

Use this article to add splits (for example, semesters, trimesters, quarters) in a course at the District or School level. A split is an assignable chunk of content within a course. For example, a course might be split by default into two semesters. However, the Add Split feature allows you to divide it into trimesters or quarters or even smaller modules instead.

When you create sections, the number of splits in a course controls the chunks of content that can be assigned. For example, if a full-year course is split into two semesters, you will be able to assign any given section the full-year course, Semester A, or Semester B. If, however, you add one more split, you will be able to assign your sections Trimester A, Trimester B, and Trimester C.

 Tip

You can customize courses at the district, school, section, and enrollment level (single student). The wording at the top-left of the Customization Editor shows you which level you are customizing the course for.

For example, if you're customizing a course at the District level, here's what it looks like:

Overview

As you add splits, they are automatically named. If you add one split, all of the splits in the course are automatically renamed to "trimester" instead of "semester." Add another, and they'll rename to "quarter." If you add another, all splits going forward are named "module."

Once you have added a split, you can add content to it by moving content from other existing splits, or by adding lessons from other EdgeEX courses. The customization tool respects the following hierarchy:

  • Split (for example, semester, trimester, quarter, module)
  • Unit
  • Lesson
  • Activity

For example, a lesson cannot be moved into a split if there is no unit. You must create a unit first, then move the desired lesson into the unit.

Adding a split

  1. Access the Customization Editor for one of the following:
  2. On the left navigation, click Add Split.
    Click-Add-Split.png
  3. A new split populates at the top of the list. In this example, the new split, which has been automatically named Trimester A, is empty and ready to be populated. The existing splits have also been renamed automatically and exist in the same order as before, directly below the new split in the list.

If you want your new split to be added somewhere other than the beginning of the course, you can drag it anywhere else in the course structure and it will automatically be retitled with the appropriate letter. (For example, if you want a newly added Trimester A to display at the end of the course, you can drag it to the bottom and it will be renamed Trimester C.)

To begin populating the new split, click the Trimester A bar.
    Click-TrimesterA.png

  4. The new split displays on the right side of the screen. It includes an exam, whose assessment item pool will be populated with questions from units that are added to the new split. On the left navigation or on the right side of the screen, click Add Unit.

  5. The new unit displays. Continue to EdgeEX — Customizing courses: Adding a unit to a course, section, or enrollment for steps for editing the new unit.
  6. Add lessons to the new unit as desired. Continue to EdgeEX — Customizing courses: Adding a lesson to a course, section, or enrollment for steps.
  7. Rename the new split as desired by clicking the pencil icon next to the title of the split.

     Important

To remove a split, you must first remove all the units within the split. Once the split is empty, the trash icon displays, and you can use it to remove the unit from the course.

  8. Add and rearrange additional units as desired.
  9. Once you have made all the desired customizations, at the top-right of the page, click Publish. Then, continue through the workflow until a confirmation page displays.
