EdgeEX — Customizing courses: Creating activities for participation grades or tasks completed offline

In heritage Imagine Edgenuity courses, the Additional Activities feature allows educators to assign a grade to offline activities (that is, activities that don’t exist within the course structure).

This feature is useful when you are assigning a:

  • Grade for part of a course completed somewhere else.
  • Grade for an activity students completed outside of the course.
  • Participation grade.

In EdgeEX courses, all activities must exist within the course structure. However, you can create the effect of the heritage Additional Activity by creating an activity in EdgeEX and assigning it the minimum of one minute of completion time. By doing this, the activity will not impact the progress or due dates for a student’s course.

Creating Additional Activities in EdgeEX courses

To create an activity for this purpose:

  1. Add an activity to any lesson in the course.
  2. Complete the following:
    • Give the title an activity of Participation Grade (or any variation that you want).
    • Assign a grade weight category that is not already represented in the course elsewhere (for example, add a Speaking Activity to a Science course, add a Lab Report to an English course, or add an Essay to a Science course). This will mean that the grade assigned to this activity will be the only grade in its category.
    • Include a completion time of one minute.

  3. After publishing the course, modify the grade weights to give your new grade weight category whatever weight you wish to allocate to the offline activity.
  4. Score the activity in the Enrollment Hub > Grade tab; the student does not need to complete it.
