Common scenarios for customizing courses for a section
Most of the time, a section will have the same course structure as the course in the School Catalog. That is, in most cases, all sections are customized in the same way. However, there are several scenarios in which sections of the same course might have different customizations, including exam-only sections and sections created for a particular marking period.
Choose one of the following to learn how to customize a section to fit your needs:
In heritage Imagine Edgenuity, educators can create exam-only courses from the Manage Courses page. In EdgeEX, you can create an exam-only section for either semester using customization. (You cannot yet create an exam-only section for the full-year version of a course; that will come later in 2024.)

Step-by-step instructions for creating an exam-only section
To create an exam-only section, complete the following steps:
- Create a new section from the School Catalog.
- On the Create Section flyout, complete the following:
Field Action Section Name This field is prefilled with the course you selected. You may wish to include EXAM ONLY in the name. Version
From the drop-down menu, select the semester you wish to assess. Grade Level From the drop-down menu, select the applicable Grade Level for your section. Notes
- The Grade Level defaults to the lowest Grade Level available for that course.
- Depending on the course, Grades 3–13 are available, with 13 representing adult learners.
- You can only select one grade level for a section.
Primary Teacher From the drop-down menu, assign as a primary teacher the educator who will be responsible for unlocking the exam.
Additional Teachers If the responsibility of unlocking exams will be shared, from the drop-down menu, add additional teachers. - For the Start Date and Target Date, use the dates of the testing window.
- Once the section is created, customize the section using the steps in Customizing a course for a section below.
In heritage Imagine Edgenuity, educators can create copies of courses for each marking period (for example, first nine weeks, quarter 1). In EdgeEX, you can create a section for a particular marking period using customization. (Later in 2024, you will also be able to add additional splits to a course, so that you can create multiple sections for a given marking period more easily.)

Step-by-step instructions for creating a section for a marking period
To create a section for a marking period, complete the following steps:
- Create a new section from the School Catalog.

From the drop-down menu, select the semester you wish to assess. Grade Level From the drop-down menu, select the applicable Grade Level for your section. Notes

Customizing a course for a section
- Access the applicable section.
- On the left navigation, click Content.
- In the center pane, click Customize.
- When the Customization Editor displays, make the desired changes:
Note
- If you are creating an exam-only section, remove all content except for the final exam. If you wish, you can also include the practice exam.
- If you are creating a section for a marking period, remove all the content that is not included in the marking period.
Feature Description Preview activity Click an activity's tile to view the activity.
Hide elements You can hide the following elements:
- Semester
- Unit
- Lesson
- Activity
Click the checkmark next to the name of the element to hide it.
Hidden elements display in the course structure in grey.
Filter and hide by activity type At the top of the page, click Activities.
In the list that displays, deselect the box next to the activity type that you would like to hide. For example, if you want to hide all the quizzes from a course, uncheck the button next to Quiz.
Once you have deselected a type, all activities of that type display in the course structure in grey.Reorder elements Coming soon! Add content Coming soon! - To undo your last change, click Undo at the top-right of the page.
Tips
- You can also use keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+Z on a PC, CMD+Z on a Mac) to undo a change.
- To undo all changes, click the X at the top-right of the page.
On the Discard Changes window that displays; click Confirm.
- At the top-right of the page, click Publish.
- On the Apply Customizations screen, review the changes; then click Next.
- Determine if you want hidden content included in assessments. Check or uncheck the boxes as applicable; then click Next.
Note
If you are creating an exam-only course, select the Check All button to include all the content you have removed in Tests and Exams. (Or, if you prefer to only assess certain lessons, you can leave lessons you do not want assessed unchecked here. This is a good way to assess only power standards or other essential content.)
- Determine how you want to apply the changes to enrollments and select or deselect the radio button. Then click Next.
- Review the grade weights and make any changes; then click Apply.
Note
If you are creating an exam-only section, adjust the grade weights so that the exam is weighted 100%.
- A confirmation page displays; click Done.
