EdgeEX — Customizing a course for a section

Use this article to customize a course for a section.

 Permission

You must have the following permission to complete the steps on this page: EdgeEX Customize Assigned Course Section.

To check your permissions, reference Checking your educator permissions.

 Tips

Customization includes the ability to exclude units, lessons, or activities at the district, school, section, and enrollment level (single student). The wording at the top-right of the Customization Editor shows you which level you are customizing the course for.

For example, if you're customizing a section, here's what it looks like:

Common scenarios for customizing courses for a section

Most of the time, a section will have the same course structure as the course in the School Catalog. That is, in most cases, all sections are customized in the same way. However, there are several scenarios in which sections of the same course might have different customizations, including exam-only sections and sections created for a particular marking period.

Choose one of the following to learn how to customize a section to fit your needs:

Creating an exam-only section

In heritage Imagine Edgenuity, educators can create exam-only courses from the Manage Courses page. In EdgeEX, you can create an exam-only section for either semester using customization. (You cannot yet create an exam-only section for the full-year version of a course; that will come later in 2024.)

To create an exam-only section, complete the following steps:

  1. Create a new section from the School Catalog. When creating the section, consider the following:

    Field Action
Section Name You may wish to include EXAM ONLY in the name.

    Version

Select the semester you wish to assess.
Grade Level Select the applicable Grade Level for your section.

     Notes

    • The Grade Level defaults to the lowest Grade Level available for that course.
    • Depending on the course, Grades 3–13 are available, with 13 representing adult learners.
    • You can only select one grade level for a section.
    Primary Teacher

Assign as a primary teacher the educator who will be responsible for unlocking the exam.

Additional Teachers If the responsibility of unlocking exams will be shared, add additional teachers.
Start and Target Dates Use the dates of the testing window.
  2. Once the section is created, customize the section using the steps in Customizing a course for a section below.
Creating a section for a particular marking period

In heritage Imagine Edgenuity, educators can create copies of courses for each marking period (for example, first nine weeks, quarter 1). In EdgeEX, you can create a section for a particular marking period using customization. (Later in 2024, you will also be able to add additional splits to a course, so that you can create multiple sections for a given marking period more easily.)

To create a section for a marking period, complete the following steps:

  1. Create a new section from the School Catalog. When creating the section, consider the following:

    Field Action
Section Name You may wish to include the marking period in the name.

    Version

Select the semester you wish to include.

Start and Target Dates Use the dates of the marking period.
  2. Once the section is created, customize the section using the steps in Customizing a course for a section below.

(Or, if you prefer to only assess certain lessons, you can leave lessons you do not want assessed unchecked here. This is a good way to assess only power standards or other essential content.)
