If you're noticing course options that don’t match your expectations in a school-level course, section, or enrollment it could be because the course options have been individualized.
When the course option values at the section and enrollment levels don't match the Catalog level, the system is unable to complete the cascading of additional changes from the Catalog level down to the sections and enrollments. In other words, there is no way to "reset all" of the course option settings at the District Catalog level. The steps in this article are tedious but they will produce the effect of a "reset all" on the course options.
Important
To avoid having to do this in the future, always make your customizations at the highest level (District or School Catalog) before creating sections and enrollments.
After updating options at the Catalog level, you’ll often be asked whether to apply the change to existing sections or enrollments. Choose carefully.
Why having matching course options matters
EdgeEX uses a cascading model: course options flow from the default course options to the District Catalog to the School Catalog, then to sections, and finally to enrollments. But they only cascade when values match. If changes are made at a lower level (like a section or enrollment), that value becomes “custom," and won’t receive future changes.
Correcting course option mismatches
-
Run the EdgeEX Course Options summary report to determine if course options have been individualized.
Example
Your Enrollment has Essays weighted at 5% and Projects at 10%, but your School Course has Essays weighted at 10% and Projects at 5%.
- If there are differences between the course options at the District Catalog level and the School Catalog level, change the course options at the School Catalog level to match the course options at the District Catalog level. Do this for each school.
- If there are differences between the course options at the District Catalog level and the section level, change the course options at the section level to match the course options at the District Catalog level. Do this for each section.
- If there are differences between the course options at the District Catalog level and the enrollment level, change the course options at the enrollment level to match the course options at the District Catalog. Do this for each enrollment.
- Save your changes. Now that the values match, the system treats them as aligned.
- Now, you can apply any intended changes at the highest level that you want them to cascade from (for example, the School Catalog). To do this:
- Return to the School Catalog course.
- Update the course options to your intended values (for example, Essays = 10, Projects = 5).
- Save your changes. Your updates will now cascade down to aligned sections and enrollments.
Still seeing mismatches?
Check whether a change you made was saved at the expected level, or whether any customizations were applied to individual sections or enrollments that might block cascading.
If you're not sure, retrace the hierarchy from the enrollment all the way up to the District Catalog to make sure all levels match.
