EdgeEX — Understanding grade metrics

Your Overall Grade is the weighted average of completed activities based on the grade weights for each type of activity.

Remember, your grades are there to help you track your progress and improvement over time!

Scenario:

Quizzes count for 25% of your grade and tests count for 75% of your grade. Your quiz scores are 70% and 90% and your test scores are 60% and 80%.

Scores:

• Your Quiz category score is the average of the quiz scores: (70% + 90%) / 2 = 80%
• Your Test category score is the average of the two test scores: (60% + 80%) / 2 = 70%
• Your Overall Grade is calculated like this: (80% x 0.25) + (70% x 0.75) = 72.5%

Actual Grade is computed just like Overall Grade, except that zeros are averaged in for activities that are overdue. 

Your Actual Grade is the weighted average of all the activities with due dates that have passed, based on the grade weights for each type of activity. Actual Grade includes zeros for overdue work. Once you finish those overdue activities, your Actual Grade will be recalculated to include the scores you earned. This means you have a chance to improve your grade without being penalized for being late!

Scenario:

Quizzes count for 25% of your grade and tests count for 75% of your grade. There are 3 quizzes with due dates that have passed, and you have only completed 2 of them. Your quiz scores are 70% and 90%. There are two tests with due dates that have passed, and you have only completed 1 with a score of 100%.

Scores:

• Your Quiz category score is the average of the three quiz scores, including the zero score: (70% + 90% + 0%) / 3 = 53.3%
• Your Test category score is the average of the two test scores, including the zero score: (100% + 0%) / 2 = 50%
• Your Actual Grade is calculated like this: (53.3% x 0.25) + (50% x 0.75) = 50.8%

Relative Grade is computed just like Overall Grade, except that zeros are averaged in for activities that you haven’t submitted yet (even if they aren’t overdue).

Your Relative Grade is what you'd get if you stopped working today. It is the weighted average of all the activities in the course, based on the grade weights for each type of activity, including zeros for any activities you have not submitted.

Scenario:

Quizzes count for 25% of your grade and tests count for 75% of your grade. There are 8 quizzes, and you have only completed 2 of them. Your quiz scores are 70% and 90%. There are 3 tests, and you have only completed 2 with scores of 80 and 100%. 

Scores:

• Your Quiz category score is the average of the eight quiz scores, including the zero scores: (70% + 90% + 0% + 0% + 0% + 0% + 0% + 0%) / 8 = 20%
• Your Test category score is the average of the three test scores, including the zero score: (80% + 100% + 0%) / 3 = 30%
• Your Relative Grade is calculated like this: (20% x 0.25) + (30% x 0.75) = 27.5%
