How it works
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Will the Proctorio Lockdown Browser work for students who are remote vs. on campus in a classroom or lab? | Yes. The Proctorio Lockdown Browser is associated with the device’s browser and will work no matter where the student uses the device. |
| Does the district need to use the IP registry (or other tools) if they want to keep students from doing assessments anywhere other than on campus? | Yes. IP Registry blocks students from accessing assessments at all if they are not on campus. |
| What is the difference between the SecureLock Browser experience and the Proctorio Lockdown Browser? |
You can use both the SecureLock Browser and the Proctorio Lockdown Browser. The SecureLock Browser is a set of instructions for Administrators to configure their Active Directory or Google policies to block students from accessing outside websites and apps while logged into Imagine Edgenuity. The Proctorio Lockdown Browser is a browser extension that gets installed on the student's device, and prevents other browser extensions from loading. For details, reference How Proctorio Lockdown Browser, SecureLock Browser, and IP Registry work together. |
| Can I enable the Proctorio Lockdown Browser only for certain students? | No. Every student whose home school has the Proctorio Lockdown Browser enabled will use it. |
| Will the Proctorio Lockdown Browser be based on the student's home school or the school the course is associated with? | The Proctorio Lockdown Browser is enabled at the student’s home school. If a student is enrolled in a course at another school that does not have it enabled, the student will still encounter the Proctorio Lockdown Broswer when they launch an assessment for that enrollment. This is because the browser is based on the student's home school, not the course's school. |
| Will students who manage their own devices need to install Proctorio Lockdown Browser every time they take an assessment? | No. Students who manage their own devices will need to install it one time. For details about the student experience, reference Proctorio Lockdown Browser student experience. |
| Which activities run in the Proctorio Lockdown Browser? |
Only Assessment Activities (including Pre-Testing) launch the Proctorio Lockdown Browser. In EdgeEX, Practice Test and Practice Exams launch the Proctorio Lockdown Browser, while heritage Imagine Edgenuity Test and Exam Reviews do not. Also, Prescriptive Tests do not launch the browser. Instruction, Writing and other non-Assessment activities do not launch the Lockdown Browser. |
| Why does Proctorio need to know my student's physical location? |
It doesn't. During the Proctorio extension installation, the browser will display a list of things that Secure Exam Proctor can do, one of those things being "Detect your physical location." This message is populated by the browser, not by Proctorio, and is generic to the type of extension, not specific to the Proctorio extension. Chrome isn't looking at how Proctorio works specifically, but is just categorizing Proctorio with similar types of extensions and populating this message. Regarding location: Proctorio, in deference to security, does not collect the student's IP address. Instead, Proctorio detects a shortened IP address because it does not need to know specifically where the student is. The shortened IP address is detected to make sure Proctorio knows the general location for routing the data to the US instead of another country, and to prevent some malicious activity such as someone entering the exam who shouldn't be there. Proctorio is a heavily data-privacy focused organization. Proctorio Privacy policy describes how Proctorio handles data. In short, it is encrypted in such a way that Proctorio is unable to access it. |
| If a student doesn’t install Proctorio, can they take the assessment? | No, installation is required. |
| Can students access guided notes while testing? | Students can open PDFs (like Guided Notes) in Heritage courses, but not yet in EdgeEX courses. Support for EdgeEX is on our future roadmap. |
| If Proctorio Lockdown Browser closes an exam, is progress saved? | Yes. |
| What happens if a student loses Internet connection during a test? | Proctorio Lockdown Browser will pause the assessment and resume once the connection is restored. |
| What if I don’t want the Proctorio Lockdown Browser extension to run when the student isn’t working in Edgenuity? | It won’t. The Proctorio Lockdown Browser extension activates when students launch an Edgenuity assessment, and closes when students submit or leave the assessment. |
| What happens if a student who does not have the Proctorio Lockdown Browser extension launches an assessment? | The student is prevented from launching the assessment and is redirected to download and install the Proctorio Lockdown Browser extension. If the student does not have administrative rights to their device, you will need to install the extension for them. |
| My district uses Chrome Admin to manage district-supplied devices. When installing the Proctorio extension, should I select Force installed in Students, or Force installed in Devices? | Select Force installed in Students. |
