How the Proctorio Lockdown Browser works
The Proctorio Lockdown Browser is a third-party browser extension that runs on the Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers. It is launched whenever the student launches an assessment (pre-test, quiz, test or exam) in Imagine Edgenuity. If the Proctorio Lockdown Browser is not installed, the assessment will not launch.
The Proctorio Lockdown Browser locks down a number of things in the student’s browser experience during assessments, mainly:
- Requiring other browser extensions besides Proctorio to be closed (except those on the Proctorio allowed extensions list).
- Requiring other tabs besides the Imagine Edgenuity tab to be closed.
- Not allowing new browser tabs or windows to be opened.

Getting the best results
You will have the best results using the Proctorio Lockdown Browser if:
- You issue district-owned and district-managed devices to your students.
- Those devices have only one browser installed.
- Students don’t have administrative control over their device.
District-managed devices with a single browser offer the tightest lockdown capabilities. Students will be locked to the browser in which they launch the assessment and won’t be able to use other browsers to search for answers.
If you don’t issue devices to students, enabling the Proctorio Lockdown Browser will still give you the benefit of blocking userscripts, so you should enable it if this is a concern for you. You just won’t be able to prevent students from manually searching for answers using another browser.
