How the Proctorio Lockdown Browser works

The Proctorio Lockdown Browser runs as a browser extension to Chrome or Microsoft Edge browsers. It is launched whenever the student launches an assessment (pre-test, quiz, test or exam) in Imagine Edgenuity. If the Proctorio Lockdown Browser is not installed, the assessment will not launch.

The Proctorio Lockdown Browser locks down a number of things in the student’s browser experience during assessments, mainly:

  • Requiring other browser extensions besides Proctorio to be closed (except those on the Proctorio allowed extensions list. You must be logged into Imagine Edgenuity to view the list).
  • Requiring other tabs besides the Imagine Edgenuity tab to be closed.
  • Not allowing new browser tabs or windows to be opened.

Getting the best results

You will have the best results using the Proctorio Lockdown Browser if:

  • You issue district-owned and district-managed devices to your students.
  • Those devices have the Chrome browser (and no other browser) installed.
  • Students don’t have administrative control over their device.

District-managed devices with Chrome browsers offers the tightest lockdown capabilities. Students will be locked to the browser (Chrome) in which they launch the assessment and won’t be able to use other browsers to search for answers.

If you don’t issue devices to students, enabling the Proctorio Lockdown Browser will still give you the benefit of blocking userscripts, so you should enable it if this is a concern for you. You just won’t be able to prevent students from manually searching for answers using another browser.

If you don’t issue devices to students, or you do, but students have administrative control, or district-issued devices are not locked to the Chrome browser, check the Special circumstances section below.

Special circumstances

Review the special circumstances related to student devices:

If your students... Then...
Use the MS Edge browser

MS Edge has a Sidebar feature that lets students open a browser sidebar and use it to search for answers.

Proctorio is aware of this and plans to close this loophole, but we don’t have a date when the solution will be in place. The MS Edge Sidebar is one of the reasons we recommend using the Chrome browser.

If this is a district controlled device, you can disable this sidebar using a group policy.

Use Safari Safari isn’t supported. Only Chromium-based browsers are supported. Non Chromium-based browsers such as Safari and Firefox have their own security measures that prevent other security tools like Proctorio from functioning. Students who attempt to access an assessment with an unsupported browser will be prompted to use a supported browser.
Use iPads

Students (or the district) will need to download and install the Proctorio iPad app: https://apps.apple.com/app/id151183822

The iPad App setting will be available in late summer or early fall 2025.

Manage their own devices

How will students install the Proctorio Lockdown Browser extension on their device?

The first time students launch an assessment, they will be redirected to download and install the extension.

How can I stop students from installing and using a different browser to search for answers?

Enable the Proctorio Companion App for your district. The Companion App prevents students from using a different browser to access the Web and look up answers.

The Proctorio Companion App setting will be available in late summer or early fall 2025.
