Frequently asked questions
When I transfer a student from a course that is customized one way to a course that is customized another way, what happens?
The transferred enrollment adopts the customizations of the destination section.
- If the section the student is coming from is customized, the student will not lose work from the previous section. However, their grade might change based on the activities that are counted in the destination section.
- If an individual enrollment is customized, the customization travels with the student to the destination section.
What are some reasons to transfer an enrollment?
Transfer an enrollment when:
- Students need to move from one teacher’s section into another because they have changed periods, etc. Transferring an enrollment between 2 course sections that share similar options and customizations but have different teachers is the ideal reason to transfer enrollments.
- Students haven’t yet completed their coursework in their current section and are being given more time to work in a new section. Moving a student into a section that will allow them to continue is an ideal reason to transfer enrollments.
- You have accidentally assigned students to the wrong section and they haven’t started working at all. Everyone makes mistakes and transferring the enrollment involves fewer steps than archiving and creating a new one.
Are there any reasons that I should not transfer an enrollment?
Although it is technically possible to transfer an enrollment from Semester A to Semester B of a course, we do not recommend it.
Additionally, we do not recommend transferring:
- Students who were enrolled in the wrong split and have already begun working. This would be very disruptive because they would lose all progress and essentially be starting over. It would be kinder to the student to archive the accidental enrollment and create a new one.
- Students from a non-customized course to a highly customized course. This may result in the student’s progress and grades adjusting and no longer including previously completed work.
What happens to work a student has completed but is not in the course structure of the section the enrollment has been transferred to?
The work no longer counts towards the student's grade. However, if you customize the enrollment after transferring it, you can restore the completed work and it would then count towards the student's grade.
How the enrollment is impacted
