EdgeEX — Updating course names in bulk using the Course Name Import Wizard

 Permission

To update course names in the District Catalog in bulk, you must have the EdgeEX Edit Course Information and Options for All Sections permission. To check your permissions, reference Checking your educator permissions.

Use this article to update course names at the District Catalog level using the Course Name Import Wizard. The Course Name Import Wizard is an alternative method to updating course information for a single course. Use this method when you want to update multiple course names at one time, such as at the beginning of the school year. This method allows you to update some or all of your course names using one spreadsheet.

 Caution

  • The district must add courses to their District Catalogs before completing the steps in this article.
  • Updated course names apply to future sections only. In-flight sections and enrollments are not affected.

Frequently asked questions

What if the name of a course in the School Catalog is not the same as the name in the District Catalog?
As with course options, intentional changes made at the school level are not overwritten by district-level changes. If the names are not the same (that is, someone has already change the name of the course in the School Catalog), the district-level change will not apply. To allow the new name to apply, you must first access the school-level Course Hub and change the name to match the current name in the District Catalog. This action allows the Course Name Import Wizard to make the desired new name change.

Before you begin

Set yourself up for success by completing the following:

  1. Add courses to your District Catalog.
  2. Decide on a naming convention for your courses.

Accessing the Import Wizard

  1. Access your District Catalog.
  2. At the top of the page, click Import, then click Course Names.

Downloading and filling out the Import Template

  1. On the Import Wizard, click Download Import Template. An Excel file with the filename EdgeEX_Course_Names_Update_Template downloads to your computer.

  2. Open the file. It has a row for every course in your district and for each implementation model of the course (Initial Credit, Credit Recovery, Honors). You will be updating the last column on the spreadsheet.

  3. Update the New Name column for each course that you want to rename. It is prefilled with the current course name. Update the course name by typing in each field.

     Example

You can add the school year to the name of the course to differentiate between school years, as follows:

    • Current name: Algebra 1
    • New name: 26-27 Algebra 1
