Edgenuity reports three different grade metrics, designed to be used for different purposes. Your school or district may select one or more of these metrics to use throughout the school year, while others may allow the teachers to decide which to use. It is important to understand the differences between these three grading metrics, when they are typically used, and where they appear for students and parents.

Which grade metrics are visible to students?
The student sees the primary grade metric selected by the school on their home page course tile. The student can also view any additional grade metrics selected by the school on the Progress Overview and Course Report.
How can teachers see which grade metrics display for students?
A teacher can assign a course to themselves and log in with their associated student account, then review the primary metric on the student home page and any additional metrics on the Course Report.
Which grade metrics do parents see in the emailed progress report?
Parents see the primary grade metric selected by the school. Any additional grade metrics that are enabled also display but in a smaller font.
Can different grade metrics be displayed by student or by course?
No, the school selects one primary grade metric. This metric is shown for all students and all course enrollments.

Example Problem: 

A course has weights for quizzes, tests, and exams only.

Tests 20%
Exams 70%

The student has completed a few lessons so far and has earned the following three grades (and only these grades):

The complete course includes ten additional quizzes, two additional tests, and one exam. The student is only at 10% completion but the target progress is 20%. 

The student's three grades are calculated in the following way:

Overall Grade
  • There are no scores for exams, so the exam weight is distributed proportionally between quizzes and tests based on the weights for those categories (i.e., twice as much goes to tests, since tests are currently weighted twice as much as quizzes).
  • The student’s average quiz score is 90%, and it is weighted 1/3 of the course grade.
  • The student’s average test score is 70%, and it is weighted 2/3 of the course grade.
  • Overall Grade is reported as (90 + 70 + 70) / 3 = 76.67%
Actual Grade
  • The student’s Progress Ratio (actual % complete / target % complete) is 10/20 = 0.5
  • Actual Grade is reported as (Progress Ratio)(Overall Grade) = (0.5)(76.67) = 38.33%
Relative Grade
  • Assigns zeros to 10 quizzes, 2 tests, and 1 exam.
  • Quiz category is (100 + 80 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0) / 12 = 15%
  • Test category is (70 + 0 + 0) / 3 = 23.33%
  • Exam category is 0%
  • Relative Grade is computed using the weighted averages as (15)(10%) + (23.33)(20%) + (0)(70%) = 6.167%
