The Lexile Framework for Reading is a widely adopted tool for measuring reading levels. The Lexile measure is indicated by a number between 200 and 1700 followed by a capital L, i. e., 650L. Unlike other educational measurement tools, Lexile measures both the reading ability of a student and the reading difficulty of a text according to the same scale. Thus, a student with a Lexile reading ability of 850L will be paired with a text with a reading difficulty level of 850L. Using this tool, educators can better match students to texts appropriate for their reading level based on the Lexile conversion chart.
