Proctorio Lockdown Browser — Family and student experience

Your school district is using the Proctorio Lockdown Browser. This tool helps to maintain academic integrity (limit cheating) while students are taking assessments in Imagine Edgenuity and Imagine EdgeEX.

Use this article to learn about Proctorio Lockdown Browser, including what it is, how it works, and how to install any necessary applications or extensions on your student's equipment.

Overview

What it does

Proctorio Lockdown Browser and its Companion App help protect academic integrity by limiting the ability to cheat during online assessments.

During assessments, students are prevented from:

  • Opening new tabs.
  • Switching to other applications.
  • Using unapproved extensions (only extensions approved by the school district will work).
  • Using multiple monitors.
What it doesn't do

Proctorio Lockdown Browser does not:

  • Monitor camera or microphone activity.
  • Record activity.

The Proctorio Lockdown Browser is not spyware.

How to use it

Continue to the applicable section below:

District-managed device

Students will be using a compatible browser and device: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a Chromebook, Windows PC, or Mac.

What students will need to do

Launch the assessment as usual. If the Proctorio Lockdown Browser has already been installed, the assessment will launch immediately.

If the Proctorio Lockdown Browser has not been installed, the student will be prompted first to download and install the extension. Follow the instructions.

Bring your own device

Students using their own equipment must be using a compatible browser and device: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a Chromebook, Windows PC, or Mac.

What students will need to do

When the student launches an assessment, Imagine Edgenuity will detect that the Proctorio Lockdown Browser is not installed. The student will receive a prompt to install the Proctorio Lockdown Browser to continue the assessment. Follow the instructions.

What software gets installed?

The following software gets installed:

  • Proctorio Lockdown Browser extension for Chrome or MS Edge.
  • Proctorio Companion App (only if your district requires it). The Companion App offers advanced protection by preventing students from opening other browsers or applications.

Will the software conflict with anything else on our device?

Proctorio Lockdown Browser does not conflict with anything else on your device. It closes incompatible extensions when an assessment is launched, then restores them after the student is finished working on the assessment.
