Active Time (Definition)

In heritage Imagine Edgenuity course reporting, Active Time is the time a student spends on an activity up to submission for a score. This time includes watching videos, answering questions, taking eNotes, reading transcripts, or reviewing the Glossary while logged into Imagine Edgenuity. Active Time ends when an activity is completed and a score is assigned, with the exception of the Session Log.

 Caution

In EdgeEX reporting, Active Time on the Session Log includes two metrics that are reported on the Session Log:

  • Activity Time (time spent by the student on an activity up to submission for a score)
  • Review Time (reviewing activities that are already completed)

For more information about how Active, Review, and Idle Time are used in EdgeEX reporting, reference EdgeEX — Using the Attendance Log and Session Log.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't the Active Time on the Session Log match the Active Time on the Manage Enrollments page?
On the Session Log, activities do not need to be submitted and scored for their time to be counted.
My student is taking an AP course that requires them to read from a textbook. Does that time get calculated as active time?
Since the active time data metric refers to work within the Imagine Edgenuity platform, any work completed outside of Edgenuity cannot be logged. However, a student can open the reading activity inside their Imagine Edgenuity AP course and leave that open while they are reading their textbook to account for this time. Remember that students get auto logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity, so if they want to spend longer than 30 minutes to read from the textbook, they'll need to click the continue button on the logout warning popup.
I have my students take notes in another system, either online or in their notebooks. Does that time writing notes get calculated as Active Time in Imagine Edgenuity?
Imagine Edgenuity's Active Time metric relates to the time students are spending actively working inside of Imagine Edgenuity. Work completed externally will not count unless they have an unsubmitted activity open within Imagine Edgenuity. In this case, they could open the Edgenuity activity and leave it open while they write their notes elsewhere to count that time.

Purpose:

To monitor how much time students are legitimately spending moving forward in their coursework.

Examples:

  1. If a student launches a link (e.g., a third-party website in an Online Content activity, a reading passage in the CloseReader™), they also still have the Assignment open. The system will continue to record active time while the student is reading until the student returns to the Imagine Edgenuity lesson and clicks Submit, Home, or Save and Exit. If the student simply closes the browser, the time spent reading will be captured as idle time.
  2. If a student is watching an instructional video, the system will only record active time if they:
    • Complete the activity and clicks the Submit button, or
    • Click the Home button to return to the Course Map.
  3. If a student is staring at an assessment question for ten minutes, it is still active time as long as the activity hasn't yet been completed/submitted.
    • Any retakes a student completes will count as Active time as they are making progress in a course. This includes if a student passes an assessment but wants to retake it for a better score; the system will calculate this attempt as Active time.
