ETS Messages

Here are the specific ETS messages that will be presented to teachers if the essay could not be scored by eRater.

For 11th and 12th grade, the Excessive Length message is a common one. Currently, ETS will only score essays that are 800 words or less, but we allow students to submit essays that are up to 10,000 words.

No Resemblance Your essay does not resemble others that have been written on this topic. This might be an indication that it is about something else or is not relevant to the issues the topic raises.
Reuse of Language Compared to other essays written on this topic, your essay contains more reuse of language, which may be an indication that it contains sentences or paragraphs that are repeated.
Key Concepts Compared to other essays written on this topic, your essay shows less development of the key concepts on this topic.
Not Relevant Your essay might not be relevant to the assigned topic.
Restatement Your essay appears to be a restatement of the topic with few additional concepts.
Too Brief Your essay is too brief to evaluate.
Excessive Length This essay is longer than essays that can be accurately scored. Your essay must be within the word limit to receive a score.
Unidentifiable Organizational Elements Your essay could not be scored because some of its organizational elements could not be identified.
Excessive Number of Problems Your essay could not be scored because too many problems in grammar, usage, mechanics, and style were identified.
Unexpected Topic Your essay appears to be on a subject that is different from the assigned topic.
Non-Essay The text you submitted does not appear to be an essay.
