In an effort to guard against cheating, Imagine Edgenuity began taking proactive steps to block userscripts and browser extensions that attempt to write to our system in mid-2024. However, as we stepped up our ability to block the scripts, the creators of those scripts also stepped up their ability to evade the blocking.
At this time, we are able to block some scripts, but not all scripts. When we detect students using a script, the activity is auto-submitted with a score of zero and the student is alerted as to why. The message will say, "This activity has been submitted with a score of 0% due to excessive attempts." If the activity is one that is not usually counted toward the student's grade (e.g., Instruction), it will be counted in the Assignments category.
This action will be recorded in Recent Actions as "Automation Suspected - Submitted with Zero Score." This action is only taken when we have 100% confidence that the student has used a script, and not every instance of script usage is detectable. In other words, if this action appears in the Recent Actions report, you can be confident that the student was using a script that involves a high level of automation. However, if the action does not appear in the Recent Actions report, it does not necessarily mean the student is not using a script — they may be using a script we are not able to detect.
Ultimately, we will only be able to block scripts consistently by requiring the installation of a blocking extension on the student's browser. Because of this, we have partnered with Proctorio to offer a lockdown browser for all Edgenuity assessments for Back to School 2025. Proctorio will be included for all Edgenuity and EdgeEX partners at no additional charge.
Webinar
On October 29, 2024, we held to a webinar to share best practices for academic integrity and to preview the Proctorio partnership. View a recording of the webinar here: Navigating Academic Integrity in Online Learning.
How will the Proctorio Lockdown Browser work?
The Proctorio Lockdown Browser will be an extension that students will install on their regular browser. When students launch an assessment, Edgenuity will check to make sure the extension is installed and will not allow students to take the assessment if it isn't. The extension will prevent students from opening other tabs or running any scripts while they are taking the assessment. If the student also has a device that allows multiple browsers to be installed, they will need to also install a Companion Application that will prevent students from launching a second browser (different from the one they use for Edgenuity), or other applications.
Proctorio will be active for assessments only (pretests, quizzes, tests, and exams) and districts will be able to configure the Lockdown Browser on or off by home school. In the future, we may explore making more granular configurations available, but the 2025 feature will be by school only.
