Frequently asked questions

What will happen if one of the Lock Course options is on and the relevant date is changed?
The Lock Course option will respect the change. For example, if a student’s Start Date is set to January 1 with Lock Course Before Start Date enabled, and on January 5 an educator changes the Start Date to January 10, the course will lock and will not be available to the student again until January 10.
Will the 7-day countdown start 7 days before the Target Date or 7 days before the course will actually lock?
It will start 7 days before the course will actually lock. For example, if a student’s Target Date is June 30 with Lock Course 5 Days After Target Date enabled, the course will lock on July 5 and the countdown will begin on June 28.

Overview

Although both heritage and EdgeEX courses allow start and target dates to be set for a course or enrollment, EdgeEX offers a significant amount of new functionality related to these dates. This functionality is controlled from the Course Options section of each hub.

Setting the Start and Target Dates is done when creating a Section. Courses do not have associated dates, because students are enrolled in Sections and not directly in Courses.

While the Term Type options of Fixed Term and Rolling Enrollment are visible in the Start and Target Dates section, they are not editable from here.

EdgeEX courses have 2 new options to control student access to a course outside of the Start/Target window:

When turned on, the student course tile provides a message showing why a course is locked and displays a lock icon.

Start and target date options

Lock Course After Target Date When this option is on, students can see the course on their homepage, but they will not be able to launch it after the Target Date (or after a specified number of days after the Target Date has passed).
